Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez holding an online “know your rights” seminar – what’s the worst that could happen, right? I mean, it’s not like the Trump administration is targeting the city for mass deportations or anything. And, of course, there are no accounts of legal U.S. residents getting caught up in enforcement actions – that would never happen. But, apparently, Tom Homan, the “border czar,” has a problem with Ocasio-Cortez informing her constituents about their rights.
And, let’s be real, Homan’s response was totally reasonable – I mean, who doesn’t love a good veiled threat? He went on Fox News and said that Ocasio-Cortez might be “impeding” law enforcement efforts, and that he’s working with the Department of Justice to find out if she’s “crossing the line.” Because, clearly, educating people about their constitutional rights is a serious offense. I’m sure it has nothing to do with the fact that Ocasio-Cortez is a Democrat and Homan is a Trump appointee – that would be crazy. You can find more information on immigration law on Amazon.
But, wait, it gets better – Homan also suggested that it might be illegal for a congresswoman to inform members of the public about their constitutional rights. Because, you know, the First Amendment is overrated. And, of course, Homan has already been in communication with the Justice Department about Ocasio-Cortez, because that’s not a waste of time or resources at all. For good measure, Homan made another Fox News appearance, telling Sean Hannity that they’re looking for a way to take action against people who want to “evade” ICE. Because, clearly, the real problem here is that people are being informed about their rights, not that the Trump administration is trying to curtail criminal investigations into Republican members of Congress. As part of this apparent media blitz, Homan also decided to add an ad hominem dimension to his offensive, calling Ocasio-Cortez “the dumbest congresswoman ever elected to Congress.” Because, you know, that’s a totally professional and respectful thing to say. And, of course, Ocasio-Cortez responded, telling Homan that he’s got nothing, and that the Fourth Amendment is clear. You can check out the original article for more information.
There’s ample evidence to suggest that Ocasio-Cortez is right, and that Homan is just trying to intimidate her. I mean, seriously, who tries to threaten a congresswoman for informing her constituents about their rights? It’s like Homan is trying to be the villain in a bad action movie. But, hey, at least he’s consistent – consistently wrong, consistently misogynistic, and consistently inconsistent in his application of the law. To date, there’s been no public reporting suggesting Justice Department officials actually care about Homan’s concerns, and it’s possible nothing will ever come of this. But, given the number of Trump-appointed loyalists in positions of authority at Main Justice, it’s also possible that Ocasio-Cortez might face some questions from federal law enforcement. And, if that happens, we’ll be here to call out the hypocrisy and the abuse of power for what it is. You can check out the original article for more information.
But, hey, at least we can all agree that this is a wild ride, right? I mean, who needs Twitter when you have Homan and Ocasio-Cortez going at it? And, who knows, maybe we’ll even get a new book out of this – “The Art of the Threat: How to Intimidate a Congresswoman and Lose Anyway.” You can check out the original article for more information.
And, finally, let’s all take a moment to appreciate the congressional hearings that will inevitably follow this debacle. I mean, who doesn’t love a good hearing where politicians get to grandstand and pretend to care about the issues? It’s like a soap opera, but with more drama and less common sense.
