Trump Axes $17.75 Minimum Wage, Contractors Now Required to Live off Hope and Tweets Alone

8 Min Read

I’m just so thrilled to be talking about politics, said no one ever, but let’s dive into this mess anyway. The White House has just announced that Trump is overturning the $17.75 minimum wage for federal contractors, because, you know, who needs a living wage, right? (I mean, have you seen the prices of avocado toast lately?) And by the way, can someone explain to me why we’re still using the term "federal contractors" – isn’t that just a fancy way of saying "people who do actual work"?

But, I guess that’s not the point, the point is that Bureau of Labor Statistics says the current federal minimum wage is $7.25, so this would’ve been a nice bump, and by nice, I mean it’s still not enough to afford a decent apartment in most cities, but hey, it’s a start. And, let’s be real, who doesn’t love the idea of making a few extra bucks, am I right? (Side note: have you checked out the prices of coffee machines on Amazon lately? Mind. Blown.)

And, I know I’m going off on a tangent here, but can we talk about the Office of Personnel Management for a second? Like, what even is their job, besides making sure federal employees are paid a wage that’s barely enough to cover their student loans? I mean, I’m no expert, but it seems like they’re just a bunch of bureaucrats trying to justify their own existence, but hey, what do I know?

But, back to the issue at hand, so, Trump is overturning this wage increase, and I’m just wondering, what’s the logic behind this decision? Is it because he’s trying to save the government some money, or is it because he just really hates the idea of people making a living wage? (Also, has anyone noticed how The Apprentice is still a thing?) And, by the way, can someone please explain to me why we’re still using the term "federal contractors" – isn’t that just a fancy way of saying "people who do actual work", I mean, what’s next, are we going to start calling NASA astronauts "space freelancers"?

And, let’s talk about the logic behind this decision, because, honestly, I’m just not seeing it, maybe I’m just not smart enough, or maybe I’m just too busy trying to pay my own bills to care, but seriously, who makes these decisions? But, in all seriousness, this move is going to affect thousands of workers, and I’m just wondering, what’s the plan here, are we just going to expect them to live off of ramen noodles and Daytime TV?

But, I guess that’s just the way the cookie crumbles, right? And, by the way, can someone please explain to me why we’re still using the term "minimum wage" – isn’t that just a fancy way of saying "we’re paying you the bare minimum, don’t expect a raise anytime soon"? (Also, has anyone noticed how TED Talks are still a thing?) And, I know I’m rambling here, but seriously, this whole thing just seems like a big mess, and I’m just wondering, what’s the point of even having a minimum wage if we’re just going to overturn it whenever someone decides they don’t like it?

And, let’s talk about the American Federation of Government Employees, because, honestly, I’m just not sure what their stance is on this whole issue, are they for or against the minimum wage increase, or are they just too busy trying to figure out how to unionize the entire government? But, in all seriousness, this move is going to have some serious consequences, and I’m just wondering, what’s the plan here, are we just going to expect workers to magically start making more money, or are we going to have to start relying on welfare?

But, I guess that’s just the way the ball bounces, right? And, by the way, can someone please explain to me why we’re still using the term "federal government" – isn’t that just a fancy way of saying "a bunch of people who can’t agree on anything"? (Also, has anyone noticed how <a href="https://www.schedulers.org/" target("_blank") rel="nofollow">scheduling software is still a thing?) And, I know I’m going off on a tangent here, but seriously, this whole thing just seems like a big mess, and I’m just wondering, what’s the point of even having a government if we’re just going to overturn decisions whenever someone decides they don’t like it?
