Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that he identifies as a Zionist and emphasized that no one in Canada should be afraid to call themselves a Zionist, during a speech at the National Forum on Combatting Antisemitism.
The Israeli embassy in Ottawa welcomed Trudeau’s statement, while UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights Francesca Albanese responded that Zionism infringes on Palestinian’s right to self-determination, sparking a debate on the issue of antisemitism and its rise in Canada.
