Russia has redirected five Su-35 fighter jets from Egypt to Algeria, according to satellite imagery. The aircraft were produced under a 2018 order from Egypt, but the country later withdrew from the deal due to political and economic pressure.
The Su-35s have been spotted at Ain Beida/Oum el Bouaghi Air Base in northeastern Algeria, with reports indicating that the Algerian Air Force has initiated flight operations with the aircraft. The acquisition is seen as an interim measure while Algeria awaits delivery of the Su-57 Felon, which was confirmed by Algerian state media in February 2025.
