I’m still trying to wrap my head around the sheer audacity of Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., who seems to think that his worldview is the only one that matters. And what’s with his obsession with the Bible? Pick up a Bible and read it, he says, as if that’s going to magically make all his contradictions disappear.
But let’s get real, Johnson has been more than happy to tolerate all sorts of injustices, from redentioning innocent men to a torture prison in El Salvador to falsely accusing grandparents of being "frauds" as a pretext to take away their Social Security checks. And don’t even get me started on his stance on children dying of preventable diseases like HIV and measles. It’s like, hello, Speaker Johnson, didn’t you get the memo that being a Christian means caring for the least of these?
And then, of course, there’s the whole debacle over proxy voting for new parents. Because, you know, God forbid we make it easier for them to care for their newborns while still doing their job. I mean, what’s next? Are we going to start forcing them to choose between their families and their careers? Oh wait, that’s already happening. Johnson’s tantrum over the bipartisan bill to permit House members to vote by proxy is just the icing on the cake. It’s like he’s trying to prove that the Republican Party is indeed the party of family values, as long as those values don’t include, you know, actual families.
But what really gets my goat is that Johnson himself voted by proxy multiple times during the pandemic. Like, come on, Speaker Johnson, can’t you see the hypocrisy? It’s not like we’re asking you to give up your golf clubs or anything (although, let’s be real, that would be a great idea). We’re just asking you to treat others the way you want to be treated. You know, that whole Golden Rule thing.
And don’t even get me started on the whole proxy voting policy. I mean, it’s not like we’re talking about some radical, socialist idea here. We’re talking about basic human decency. As Rep. Brittany Pettersen, D-Colo., said during the debate, "When I was pregnant, I couldn’t fly towards the end of my due date because it was unsafe." Like, hello, can’t we just have a little compassion here?
But no, instead of compassion, we get Johnson’s tantrum and the Republican Party’s ongoing effort to restore traditional families. Because, you know, that’s exactly what we need. More Stepford wives and fewer women in leadership. I mean, who needs female empowerment when you can have men telling you what to do?
And then, of course, there’s the whole issue of remote work. Because, you know, the Republican Party is all about limiting women’s opportunities. I mean, who needs flexibility and work-life balance when you can have a 9-to-5 job and a bunch of domestic chores waiting for you at home? It’s like, hello, can’t we just have a little bit of common sense here?
But I guess that’s just the problem. The Republican Party has lost all sense of decency and compassion. They’re more interested in pushing their ideological agenda than in actually helping people. And that’s why we need to stay informed and keep speaking out against their hypocrisy. We need to keep demanding that our leaders actually lead by example and show some basic human decency. Anything less is just unacceptable.
Anyway, I’m done ranting for now. But before I go, let me just say that if you’re as fed up as I am with the Republican Party’s war on women, then you need to sign up for our newsletter and stay informed. We’ll keep you updated on all the latest news and analysis on the issues that matter. And who knows, maybe someday we’ll have a revolution and we can finally get some real change in this country. A girl can dream, right?
