I’m still trying to wrap my head around this, but apparently, Maine protesters are outraged that Sen. Collins hasn’t held a town hall in, wait for it, 25 years – because, you know, that’s not a long time at all (or is it?). And, honestly, who needs to listen to their constituents when you can just, you know, not listen to them for a quarter of a century?
But, seriously, what’s the point of even having a senator if they’re not going to, I don’t know, represent their people? I mean, I’ve seen more accountability from a children’s lemonade stand. And don’t even get me started on the whole “representative democracy” thing – it’s like, what’s the point of that if our representatives don’t actually, you know, represent us?
And, by the way, has anyone else noticed that politicians seem to only care about their constituents when it’s time to get re-elected? It’s like, hello, we’re not just ATM machines for your campaign funds, you know – we’re actual human beings with opinions and needs and stuff. But, hey, I guess that’s just the way the politics cookie crumbles, right?
But, in all seriousness, 25 years is a long time – like, a really long time – and you’d think that, maybe, just maybe, Sen. Collins would’ve gotten the hint by now that, hey, people want to be heard. I mean, it’s not like they’re asking for the magic crystal ball of politics or anything – just a simple town hall would suffice. And, honestly, if I were a Mainian (is that a thing?), I’d be angry too – like, really angry.
And, can we please just take a moment to talk about the state of Maine itself? I mean, it’s like the postcard perfect example of a state that’s just, you know, trying to make it work – with their tourism and their lobster and their, you know, pine trees – but, despite all that, they still have to deal with politicians like Sen. Collins who seem to be, you know, completely out of touch.
But, I guess what I’m trying to say is, Mainians (okay, I’m just going to start using that term now), deserve better – they deserve a senator who actually, you know, cares about their concerns and, you know, isn’t afraid to, you know, listen to them. And, hey, if that means holding a town hall every, say, 24 years and 11 months, then so be it – just, you know, do it.
And, on a completely unrelated note, has anyone tried those Maine blueberries? They’re, like, amazing – but, I digress. Anyway, back to Sen. Collins and her, you know, lack of town halls – it’s like, come on, senator, get with the program already.
But, what’s even more interesting is that, despite all this, Sen. Collins still manages to, you know, stay in office – it’s like, what’s the secret to her success? Is it the campaign finance thing? The voter suppression thing? Or is it just, you know, good old-fashioned politics?
And, finally, can we please just talk about the protesters themselves? I mean, they’re the real MVPs here – the ones who are, you know, actually trying to make a difference. So, to all the Mainians out there who are, you know, fighting the good fight, I say, keep on fighting – and, hey, maybe, just maybe, you’ll get that town hall you’ve been, you know, dreaming of.
