Are you kidding me?! Three-quarters of Americans are troubled by the administration’s use of Signal to discuss military plans, and I’m like, what’s wrong with the other quarter? Don’t they care that their government is using a messaging app to plan who-knows-what in Yemen? I mean, I’ve used Signal to plan my fantasy football league, but this is a whole different level. And by the way, have you seen the “Signalgate” controversy that’s been plaguing the White House? It’s like a real-life episode of “Game of Thrones,” but with more buffoonery.
But let’s get back to the issue at hand. Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar is reportedly drafting articles of impeachment against three Trump administration officials who thought it was a good idea to discuss U.S. plans to bomb Yemen in a Signal group chat. I mean, who needs classified information when you can just use a messaging app, right? And don’t even get me started on the fact that they were celebrating the bombing of civilians – it’s like they’re trying to win some kind of twisted award for most creative use of a war crime. You can read more about it here, but be warned: it’s not for the faint of heart.
And what’s with the leaked messages from that group chat? It’s like they thought they were playing a game of “Call of Duty” or something. Newsflash: this is real life, folks, and people are dying because of your actions. I’m not sure what’s more disturbing – the fact that they were discussing military operations on a messaging app or the fact that they thought it was okay to do so. You can check out the reaction from Colorado congress members on the issue, but I’m sure it’s not going to be pretty.
I mean, come on, people! This is not a game. This is war. And war crimes are not something to be taken lightly. If you’re interested in learning more about the laws of war, I’d be happy to provide some resources. But let’s get back to the issue at hand. President Donald Trump needs to fire at least one official who was involved in the group chat, and preferably all of them. I’m not sure what’s more embarrassing – the fact that they used Signal to discuss military plans or the fact that they got caught.
And have you seen the polling on this issue? It’s like Americans are finally waking up to the fact that their government is not always working in their best interest. 74 percent of Americans view the matter as serious, while only 13 percent say they aren’t concerned. I’m not sure what’s more surprising – the fact that 13 percent of Americans aren’t concerned or the fact that 74 percent are. Maybe we’re finally starting to see a glimmer of hope in this country.
But let’s not get too distracted. The fact remains that the Trump administration is still trying to cover up their tracks, and we need to hold them accountable. If you’re interested in supporting independent media organizations that are working to uncover the truth, you can check out some options here. And if you’re feeling generous, you can even donate to Truthout to support their work.
And, by the way, have you seen the statement from Ilhan Omar on the issue? It’s like she’s the only adult in the room. “Pete Hegseth is an embarrassment to Minnesota,” she said. “His incompetence and blatantly illegal actions demonstrate he is grossly unfit to lead the Department of Defense.” I couldn’t agree more.
But, I mean, what’s the point of all this? Are we just going to keep going through the motions, or are we actually going to do something about it? I’m not sure, but I do know that we need to keep pushing for accountability and transparency in our government. And if that means impeachment proceedings, then so be it. Bring it on, I say.
And, finally, can someone please explain to me why the Trump administration thought it was a good idea to use Signal to discuss military plans? I mean, I’ve used Signal to discuss my fantasy football league, but this is a whole different level. Maybe they thought they were above the law or something. But let me tell you, they’re not. They’re just a bunch of buffoons who think they can do whatever they want. Well, newsflash: they can’t. And it’s time we hold them accountable.
