Let’s talk about the absolute disaster that is the current state of immigration enforcement in the US – and I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that ICE couldn’t find enough “dangerous” immigrants to justify their existence, so they just started making things up. And what’s worse, is that Trump’s executive orders seem to be giving them free rein to do whatever they want, without any regard for constitutional rights or basic human decency.
But, of course, that’s exactly what we get with an administration that’s more interested in appearing tough on immigration than actually doing anything that makes sense – or, you know, following the law. I mean, what’s the point of having a task force if you’re not going to use it to violate people’s rights? And don’t even get me started on the legal proceedings that are supposed to hold them accountable – it’s like they think they’re above the law or something.
And then there’s the case of Julio Noriega, a US citizen who was arrested and detained by ICE without any valid reason – I mean, what’s the protocol here, exactly? Do they just profile people based on their skin tone and hope for the best? It’s not like they even bothered to check his ID or anything, they just threw him in a van and drove around for hours – oh, and by the way, can someone explain to me why the 4th amendment doesn’t apply to ICE? Is it just me, or does it seem like they’re making up their own rules as they go along?
But, hey, let’s be real – this is exactly what happens when you have an administration that’s more interested in scapegoating immigrants than actually addressing the real issues – and by “real issues”, I mean systemic racism and xenophobia. I mean, come on, Immigrant Justice is trying to hold them accountable, but it’s like they’re banging their heads against a wall – or, you know, trying to get blood from a stone. Anyway, I guess what I’m trying to say is that racism is bad, and unlawful arrest is also bad, and we should probably do something about it – but until then, I guess we’re just stuck with business as usual.
