Warning: rant ahead! I just can’t even right now, folks. I’m looking at the latest news on Elon Musk, and I’m just shaking my head. According to Democrats, his approval rating is “falling through the floor”. And honestly, I’m not surprised. I mean, have you seen the way he’s been acting lately? It’s like he’s trying to be the most polarizing figure in the world.
But let’s get back to the numbers. CNN‘s chief data analyst Harry Enten says that Musk’s net favorable rating has dropped from +24 to -19 overall from 2017 to 2025. And among Democrats, it’s even worse – his favorability rating has gone from +35 to -91. That’s a movement of over 120 points in the negative direction. I mean, what even is that?
And Tesla is feeling the effects too. New registrations for Tesla vehicles in the United States were down five percent in 2024, and down 11 percent in January this year. Maybe it’s because electric vehicles from other companies are getting more popular? I mean, have you seen the latest electric cars from other manufacturers? They’re giving Tesla a run for their money.
But I digress. Republican President Donald Trump seems to still be a fan of Musk, though. He’s even got him leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is tasked with slashing federal spending and shrinking the federal workforce. Because, you know, that’s exactly what we need – more government efficiency.
And if you’re wondering what people are saying about all this, well, let’s just say it’s been a wild ride. Fox News polling found that only 40 percent of voters approved of the job Musk is doing with DOGE, while 58 percent disapprove. And a CNN/SSRS poll found that 53 percent of Americans hold an unfavorable opinion of Musk, while 35 percent view him positively.
But hey, at least Elon Musk is still optimistic, right? I mean, he’s still tweeting away, saying things like “The Democratic Party is dying.” Yeah, because that’s exactly what we need – more partisan rhetoric.
And then there’s President Trump, who’s still singing Musk’s praises. He said during a Cabinet meeting on Monday, “Elon, I want to thank you. I know you’ve been through a lot with this horrible situation that happens … He’s a patriot more than anything else. He’s never, think of it, he has never asked me for a thing.” Um, okay. I guess that’s one way to look at it.
But not everyone is a fan of Musk, of course. Senator Mark Kelly, a Democrat, said he was getting rid of his Tesla in a video posted on X on March 14. He said, “Every time I get in this car in the last 60 days or so, it reminds me of just how much damage Elon Musk and Donald Trump is doing to our country. Talking about slashing Social Security, cutting health care benefits for poor people, for seniors. It’s one bad thing after the next.”
And that’s where we’re at, folks. It’s a mess, and I’m not sure how it’s all going to play out. But one thing’s for sure – Elon Musk’s approval rating is likely to continue fluctuating, especially among Democrats, as he continues to work with DOGE and be a prominent figure in the Trump administration.
By the way, has anyone else noticed that Elon Musk books are still pretty popular on Amazon? I mean, what’s up with that?
