A mysterious illness has killed over 50 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the interval between symptom onset and death being approximately 48 hours. The outbreak began after three children ate a bat and died shortly after.
The haemorrhagic fever symptoms are similar to those caused by known deadly viruses, but tests have ruled out Ebola, dengue, Marburg, and yellow fever. With 419 cases recorded and 53 deaths, health experts are working to identify the cause of this rapidly spreading illness.
