Germany’s new government, consisting of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Social Democratic Party (SPD), will abolish the 3-year expedited path to citizenship for “well-integrated” immigrants, according to their coalition agreement.
The previous 3-year option required applicants to possess an advanced C1 level of German and show strong integration in German society, but it will be replaced by the standard 5-year residency requirement with an intermediate B1 level of German, and dual citizenship will still be permitted.
