The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine cannot be safely restarted by Russia, according to Petro Kotin, chief executive of Energoatom. Kotin stated that the plant has major problems to overcome, including insufficient cooling water and personnel.
A Ukrainian restart would take two months to two years in a peaceful environment, while a Russian restart during wartime would be impossible. The plant’s future is a significant aspect of any negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, with Russia intending to retain the site and switch it back on.
