I’m still trying to wrap my head around this, but TikTok just broke the internet (not that it’s a new thing) – Senator Cory Booker‘s speech managed to get over 350 million likes, which is just, wow! And I’m not even talking about the number of people who actually watched the speech versus those who just liked it out of habit (you know, like when you’re mindlessly scrolling through your Facebook feed).
But what’s really getting my goat is that a politician’s speech is getting more likes than my funny cat videos! I mean, I’ve seen some pretty funny stuff on the internet, but 350 million likes is just absurd – is this the new Guinness World Record for most likes on a live stream?
And let’s get real for a second, what’s the point of having all those likes if you can’t even get your message across? I’m not saying Senator Booker’s speech was bad or anything (in fact, I haven’t even watched it, but that’s beside the point), but are people actually listening to what he has to say or are they just liking his videos because, why not? Maybe I’m just jealous that my own Twitter rants don’t get nearly as much attention (I mean, who needs free speech when you have likes and followers, am I right?)?
By the way, has anyone else noticed that TikTok is basically just a breeding ground for influencer marketing? Like, what’s the difference between a politician’s speech and a YouTube video promoting weight loss supplements? Both are trying to sell you something – either a product or an idea.
But I guess what I’m really trying to say is, is this really what we’ve been reduced to? A world where likes and followers are the only things that matter? And don’t even get me started on the whole social media echo chamber – it’s like, if you’re not trending, do you even exist? (As an aside, does anyone else find it weird that social media management is a thing now?)
And another thing, what’s up with the algorithm on TikTok? Like, how does it even decide what videos to show you? Is it based on your browsing history or something? I swear, sometimes I feel like it’s just trolling me with cat videos (not that I’m complaining or anything).
Anyway, back to Senator Booker’s speech – I guess what I’m trying to say is, it’s great that he’s getting so much attention, but let’s not forget what’s actually important here: the message. Not the likes, not the followers, but the actual content. So, if you haven’t watched his speech yet, maybe take a break from mindless scrolling and actually listen to what he has to say. Who knows, you might even learn something (but let’s be real, probably not).
On a completely unrelated note, has anyone tried coffee with coconut oil? It’s supposed to be really good for you or something. But I digress.
And finally, can someone please explain to me why politics has to be so… dramatic all the time? Like, can’t we all just get along? (Just kidding, that’s never going to happen). But seriously, can’t we just have a civil discourse without all the drama? Is that too much to ask? (Apparently so).
