Cory Booker Stays Awake for 12 Whole Hours, Sets New Personal Record: NPR

6 Min Read

Let’s talk about Sen. Cory Booker’s marathon speech on the Senate floor, which has been going on for over 24 hours – I mean, who needs sleep when you’re trying to make a point, right? And what a point it is – Booker is protesting the Trump administration’s policies, and I’ve got to say, I’m impressed by his endurance. I’m not sure what’s more surprising, the fact that he’s been speaking for so long or that he’s still standing – and I don’t just mean physically, although that’s impressive too.

But seriously, Booker’s speech has covered a wide range of topics, from health care and Social Security to immigration, the economy, public education, free speech, and foreign policy. And let’s not forget the books – I mean, who doesn’t love a good book, right? Although, I have to admit, I’m a bit curious about what’s on Booker’s reading list – maybe something like “The Art of Public Speaking” or “How to Give a Great Speech“?

And then there’s the tense time for Booker’s party – nine Democrats joined with Republicans to advance a Trump-backed spending bill last month, preventing a government shutdown but alienating constituents who want lawmakers to push back against the president’s agenda. But Booker’s not giving up – he’s still speaking, still fighting, and still… well, still standing, I guess. And let’s not forget the constituents who are pressing Democrats to do more – I mean, who can blame them, right?

But what’s really interesting is the history of filibusters in the Senate – did you know that the longest filibuster on record was held by Strom Thurmond in 1957, lasting for 24 hours and 18 minutes? I mean, that’s dedication – or maybe just a really strong bladder. And let’s not forget Rand Paul’s filibuster in 2013, which lasted for nearly 13 hours – I guess that’s what they mean by “standing up” for what you believe in.

Anyway, back to Booker – his speech has been a marathon effort, and I’ve got to say, I’m impressed. I mean, who wouldn’t be – the man’s been speaking for over 24 hours, and he’s still going strong. And let’s not forget the other Democrats who are supporting him – it’s a team effort, after all. And if you’re interested in learning more about the history of filibusters, I’d be happy to provide some links – or you could just read about it on NPR.

But I digress – the real question is, how long can Booker keep this up? I mean, the man’s already broken the record for the longest speech in Senate history – what’s next? Will he start eating diced pumpernickel and bits of cooked hamburger like Strom Thurmond did back in 1957? Or will he just keep on speaking, fueled by coffee and determination? Only time will tell, I guess.

And speaking of time, I’ve got to say, I’m a bit curious about how Booker’s staff is handling this – I mean, they must be exhausted, right? But hey, at least they’re supporting their boss – that’s what staff is for, after all. And who knows, maybe they’ll even start selling t-shirts or something – “I survived Cory Booker’s filibuster” has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?

But in all seriousness, Booker’s speech is more than just a marathon effort – it’s a call to action, a reminder that we need to stand up for what we believe in, even if it’s hard. And who knows, maybe it’ll even inspire some activism – after all, as John Lewis said, “Never give up, never give in.” So, let’s all take a page out of Booker’s book – or should I say, out of his filibuster book – and keep on fighting for what we believe in.

And on a final note, I’ve got to say, I’m a bit curious about what’s next for Booker – will he keep on speaking, or will he finally take a break? Only time will tell, I guess. But one thing’s for sure – he’s made his point, and he’s made it loud and clear. So, let’s all take a moment to appreciate the marathon man of the Senate, and the politics that drive him. And who knows, maybe we’ll even see a book about Cory Booker someday – after all, as they say, “you can’t make this stuff up.” But until then, let’s just keep on talking, and maybe, just maybe, we’ll make a difference.
