Hegseth’s Career on Life Support, But Somehow Still Managing to Stoke the Flames of Embarrassment

5 Min Read

I’m reading this article and I just can’t even, a majority of voters think Pete Hegseth should resign, and I’m over here wondering what took them so long to figure that out (check out the latest polls for yourself). And let’s be real, a plurality of GOP voters agreeing with this is basically a miracle, it’s like finding a unicorn in a field of horses. But what’s really going on here, is it just a case of bandwagon mentality or do people actually care about the issues at hand?

And I’m thinking, what’s the point of even having a vox populi if it’s not going to lead to some real change, I mean we’ve got books upon books on the subject, but when it comes down to it, do we actually practice what we preach? But hey, at least we’re having the conversation, right, even if it’s just a bunch of armchair politicians like me ranting online.

But seriously though, a majority of voters, that’s not just a few disgruntled citizens, that’s a significant chunk of the population, and I’m wondering what kind of news coverage this is getting, is it just being swept under the rug or are we actually addressing the issue at hand, I mean we’ve got experts and pundits galore, but sometimes I think they’re just making it worse.

And can we talk about the GOP for a second, I mean a plurality of them agreeing on something is like, well, it’s like finding a needle in a haystack, or in this case, a politics and prose book that actually makes sense, but I digress. But what does this say about the state of our politics, are we just so partisan that we can’t even agree on the basics, I mean politics is supposed to be about compromise, not just a bunch of people yelling at each other.

And then I start thinking about history, and how we’ve been here before, I mean we’ve had our fair share of scandals and controversies, but what’s different this time around, is it just the social media amplifying everything, or is there actually something more substantial going on, I mean we’ve got media studies experts who can probably explain it better than I can.

But anyway, back to Pete Hegseth, and the fact that a majority of voters think he should resign, I’m just wondering what’s next, are we going to see some real change, or is this just a bunch of rhetoric, I mean we’ve got a fact-checking website that can probably give us some insight, but sometimes I think even they’re not enough. And I’m thinking, what’s the point of even having accountability if we’re not going to enforce it, I mean we’ve got laws on the books, but do we actually follow them?

And I know I’m just a keyboard warrior, but someone’s got to say it, I mean we’ve got activism and advocacy groups, but sometimes I think they’re just preaching to the choir, I mean we need real action, not just a bunch of hashtags. But hey, at least we’re trying, right, even if it’s just a drop in the bucket, and who knows, maybe someday we’ll actually see some real revolution.

And then I start thinking about the statistics, and how they can be manipulated, I mean we’ve got fact-checking websites, but sometimes I think they’re just biased in their own way, I mean who’s to say what’s really going on, it’s all just a big spin cycle. But anyway, that’s my two cents, take it for what it’s worth, and if you want to learn more, check out Brookings, they’ve got some great analysis**.
