Ugh, Canadians are just so done with traveling to the United States thanks to President Donald Trump and his super fun trade war (said no one ever). I mean, who wants to visit a country that’s basically at war with the rest of the world, right? And, honestly, have you seen the books about Trump – there’s a whole shelf dedicated to his, ahem, “diplomacy” skills.
And, seriously, the numbers are just atrocious – 70% drop in future flight bookings from Canada to the U.S. through September, according to data from OAG. April is looking particularly bleak, with bookings down a whopping 75%. But, hey, at least the airlines might offer some cheap flights to try and stimulate demand, right? Maybe they’ll even throw in some complimentary stress balls to help passengers cope with the anxiety of traveling to the U.S. these days.
But, let’s get real, Trump is just wreaking havoc on Canada with his tariffs and threats, and it’s no wonder Canadians are boycotting vacations to the U.S. I mean, who wants to support a country that’s trying to bully its allies? (By the way, has anyone seen the Wall Street Journal article on this? It’s a real laugh riot).
And, trust me, the situation is only going to get worse – OAG is warning that the traditional “snowbird” market from Canada to the U.S. could be badly impacted next year if things don’t improve quickly. But, hey, at least Trump will be happy, right? I mean, who needs a functioning economy or good international relations when you can just tweet about how great you are?
But, seriously, 25% tariffs on many goods from Mexico and Canada? That’s just insane. And, let’s not forget the 10% tax on energy products from Canada – because, you know, Trump loves his fossil fuels. (Can someone please explain to me why we’re still using fossil fuels in the first place? It’s like, hello, electric cars are a thing now).
And, have you seen the analysis by the Brookings Institution? It’s like, basically, the economic pain will be more severe in Mexico and Canada because they’re more reliant on the U.S. for trade. But, hey, at least Trump will be happy, right? I mean, who needs international cooperation when you can just bully your way to the top?
But, in all seriousness, this trade war is just a total disaster. And, honestly, I’m so done with Trump and his antics. Can we just, like, impeach him already and move on with our lives? Please, for the love of all things good and holy, make it stop.
And, finally, if you’re still planning to travel to the U.S., you might want to check out some travel insurance options – because, you know, Trump might just decide to close the borders or something. But, hey, at least you’ll have some good stories to tell, right?
