Breaking news: Donald Trump’s net approval rating is historically bad – and not in a “I’m-going-to-make-history” kind of way, but more like a “I’m-going-to-make-a-mockery-of-the-entire-concept-of-presidential-approval-ratings” kind of way.
But, I mean, who needs a decent approval rating when you’ve got a fantastic collection of MAGA hats, right?
And by “decent approval rating,” I mean anything above, say, -2, which is where Trump is currently sitting – a whopping minus 2!
You know, it’s not like Trump fans are used to being disappointed or anything ( Spoiler alert: they are), but even they have to admit that this is a pretty big deal – I mean, it’s not every day that a president gets to say they have the lowest net approval rating in over 70 years (except, of course, for Trump’s first term, because why would we expect anything different?).
But hey, at least he’s doing slightly better than he was during his first term, so that’s a petites victoires, right?
And by “slightly better,” I mean he’s gone from a +7 in January to a -2 now, which is basically a miraculous recovery in Trump terms.
I mean, CNN’s data guru Harry Enten put it perfectly: “He is underwater. He is doing a little bit of the breaststroke, maybe doing a little bit of the butterfly.”
Because, you know, when you’re struggling to stay afloat, you might as well try out some fancy swimming moves, right?
But, in all seriousness, Enten pointed out that this is the lowest net approval rating since 1937 – and the only other president who’s ever come close to this level of unpopularity is, you guessed it, Trump himself (in 2017).
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “What about the issues, though?”
Well, let me tell you, Trump is viewed favorably on immigration, but negatively on, oh, just about everything else – economy, federal budget, foreign policy, health care, and tariffs.
It’s like he’s trying to set a new record for most issues on which he’s underwater (pun intended).
So, there you have it – Trump’s making history, but not the kind he wants to make.
As Enten so eloquently put it, “Donald Trump likes to make history, but this is a type of history that Donald Trump does not like to make.”
But hey, at least he’s consistent, right?
You can check out the Quinnipiac University polls for yourself, but let’s just say it’s not looking great for Trump.
Unless, of course, you’re a fan of historically bad approval ratings, in which case, go ahead and grab a Trump 2024 campaign t-shirt – because why not?
