Because, you know, the Trump administration is totally not trying to silence people (I mean, who needs free speech, anyway?). But seriously, a new lawsuit claims that the Trump administration has “unconstitutionally silenced” people in the US from speaking out against the government. And by “unconstitutionally silenced,” I mean they’re basically just trying to deport anyone who disagrees with them.
And let’s be real, this is not exactly a new phenomenon. I mean, who can forget the good old days of McCarthyism? But I digress. The lawsuit, filed by a Cornell University professor and two students, claims that the Trump administration is targeting international students and scholars who support Palestinian rights. Because, you know, speaking out against injustice is basically a national security threat.
But what’s really interesting (and by “interesting,” I mean terrifying) is that the lawsuit points to the detainment and attempted deportation of a pro-Palestinian protester at Columbia University as an example. I mean, who needs due process when you can just deport someone for having an opinion? And let’s not forget the chilling effect this has on free speech. I mean, who’s going to speak out against the government when they know they might get deported?
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “But what about the First Amendment?” Well, let me tell you, the Trump administration is totally respecting people’s right to free speech. I mean, who needs to actually be able to speak out against the government when you can just be deported for having an opinion?
And can we talk about the lawsuit itself? I mean, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is suing President Trump and the Department of Homeland Security on behalf of the Cornell professor and two graduate students. Because, you know, academic freedom is basically a thing of the past.
But in all seriousness, this lawsuit is a big deal. I mean, who’s going to stand up for our constitutional rights if not us? And by “us,” I mean the ACLU, the ADC, and basically anyone else who’s not a Trump supporter.
And let’s not forget the personal stories behind this lawsuit. I mean, Mahmoud Khalil, a 30-year-old pro-Palestinian protester, was detained and is now facing deportation for having an opinion. Because, you know, free speech is basically a threat to national security.
But I guess that’s just the world we live in now. I mean, who needs human rights when you can just deport people for having an opinion?
And on a completely unrelated note, has anyone tried coffee lately? I mean, it’s basically the only thing that’s getting me through these trying times.
But in all seriousness, this lawsuit is a big deal. And by “big deal,” I mean it’s a constitutional crisis. I mean, who’s going to stand up for our rights if not us?
And let’s not forget the ADC’s statement on the matter. I mean, they’re basically saying that this lawsuit is a necessary step to preserve our most fundamental constitutional protections. Because, you know, free speech is basically a thing of the past.
But I guess that’s just the world we live in now. I mean, who needs human rights when you can just deport people for having an opinion?
Anyway, that’s my two cents on the matter. And by “two cents,” I mean it’s a constitutional crisis. I mean, who’s going to stand up for our rights if not us?
And on a completely unrelated note, has anyone tried coffee lately? I mean, it’s basically the only thing that’s getting me through these trying times.
