And can you believe it, some French MP is going off the deep end, demanding that the US return the Statue of Liberty to its rightful owners – I mean, who does he think he is, right? The Statue of Liberty has been a symbol of American freedom for like, ever, and now this guy comes along and says we don’t deserve it anymore? But honestly, it’s not like we’ve been exactly living up to those whole freedom and democracy values lately, so maybe he’s got a point.
But let’s get real here, the US has been totally representing the values of freedom and democracy, I mean, just look at our politics – it’s all about the people, by the people, for the people… or something like that. And who needs things like human rights or social justice when you’ve got a good ol’ fashioned statue to symbolize it all? I mean, come on, this French MP must be joking, right? Or maybe he’s just trying to get his 15 minutes of fame.
And don’t even get me started on the whole “the US no longer represents the values that led France to offer the statue” thing – like, what values are we talking about here? The value of freedom? The value of democracy? Or the value of having a really cool statue? Because if it’s the latter, then yeah, I can see why the French would want it back – I mean, have you seen the replicas they’re selling on Amazon? It’s like, hello, we can make our own statues, thank you very much.
But seriously though, this whole thing is just a big distraction from the real issues at hand – like, what’s the point of having a statue if we’re not actually representing the values it’s supposed to symbolize? It’s like, hello, let’s focus on fixing our own country before we start worrying about some statue. And another thing, who gets to decide what values we’re supposed to be representing anyway? Is it the government? The media? Or just some random French MP who’s feeling extra patriotic today?
And by the way, has anyone noticed that this whole thing is just a big historical replay? I mean, think about it – the French give us a statue, we’re all like “oh, thanks, we’ll take it”, and then we proceed to not exactly live up to the whole freedom and democracy thing… and now the French are all like “hey, you’re not representing our values, give it back”. It’s like, déjà vu or something. But hey, at least it’s not like we’ve been imperialistic or anything, right?
But in all seriousness, I think we should just give the statue back – I mean, think of all the good karma we’ll get from it. We can just, like, ship it back to France and be all “sorry, guys, we didn’t exactly live up to your expectations”. And then we can focus on, you know, actually representing the values of freedom and democracy. Or we can just, like, 3D print our own statue and call it a day.
And can someone please explain to me why the French MP is so worked up about this? Is it because we’ve been, like, tarnishing the good name of liberty or something? Because if that’s the case, then I’m like, totally on board with giving the statue back – I mean, who needs a symbol of freedom when we’ve got patriotic t-shirts to wear? But honestly, can’t we all just get along and, like, share the statue or something?
And by the way, has anyone noticed that this whole thing is just a big diversion from the real issues at hand? I mean, think about it – we’ve got world hunger to solve, climate change to deal with, and children to educate… and yet we’re all worked up about a statue. It’s like, get your priorities straight, people. But hey, at least it’s not like we’ve been ignoring these issues or anything, right?
