Brazil’s prosecutor-general has formally charged former President Jair Bolsonaro with attempting a coup to stay in office after his 2022 election defeat. The alleged plot included plans to poison his successor, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and kill a Supreme Court judge.
The charges, which also include participating in an armed criminal organization, could result in a sentence of up to 20 years in prison if Bolsonaro is convicted. The Supreme Court will analyze the charges and decide whether to put Bolsonaro on trial.
